Live Operator Answering Service Asks – Are You Ready for Change?
Super storm Sandy, a presidential election, the Thanksgiving holiday, black Friday and cyber Monday; and that is all within the last 30 days! All of these occurrences involved planning and preparation by large numbers of people both as individuals and as businesses. While the holidays are a welcome, albeit busy time of year, the storm reminded us that unexpected and potentially devastating change can and will occur from time to time.
Resistance to Change
We all know change is constant, yet most of us are already busy people and therefore resist change to some degree as it can be seen as a lot more additional work. As a live operator answering service, we see change on a regular basis. We are typically at our busiest during holidays and severe whether events. One thing that we have noticed over the years is that bigger changes are difficult for people to address. It is not that they can’t handle it, it is just hard for them to step back enough to assess the situation with a clear mind and make the best decisions.
Having a Plan
One of the challenges associated with bigger changes is they don’t happen that often. Because people aren’t used to dealing with them, it is harder to get the right mind set to address them. This goes for both bad changes as well as good changes. We’ve talked about building the annual business plan, which many organizations are focused on this time of year. An important part of that plan, or maybe even as a separate plan, is how you will address change. It is important to think through all of the things that could happen to your business, from small changes to very large or even unexpected changes, and have an outline as to how you would approach each of them.
Making it for the Better
As a live operator answering service, we know change is constant. We also know there are good changes and bad changes. But the most important element is how your business reacts to change. If you look at any of today’s modern business success stories, they each have a rich history of changes and challenges they had to manage through. In their early years, they may not have had the best products or services, but how they reacted to change, both good and bad, helped strengthen them into the thriving success stories they are today. How about your business? What steps are you taking now to better enable your organization to embrace change going into the New Year? Please share your thoughts – we’d like to hear from you.
